OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS FIRST QUARTER

Congratulations to three of our outstanding parent volunteers at Salem Middle School – Elizabeth Dunn, Christy Yochelson, and Karin DellaMaestra. They are the recipients of the Salem Parent Volunteer Award for the first quarter 2016!

Mrs. Dunn was nominated by Mr. McMahon for always giving generously and cheerfully to the staff at the PTA-hosted lunches, and he also notes that she is very supportive of teachers! Earlier this year, she reached out to contacts that she has in the community and had Chick-fil-A donate and cater a complete breakfast for the staff training breakfast on July 5th, as well as coordinated and hosted the staff lunch on August 19th. I am sure the entire staff was very appreciative for all of those efforts! The Dunn family lives in Apex and is made up of Elizabeth, her husband Wiley, and their two sons; William, who is 13, and Matthew, who is 9. They have a dog named Zoe, a cat named Fire, and a hermit crab named Claw. She does not work outside the home, but she is always volunteering somewhere and calls herself the family Uber! Mrs. Dunn has always believed that volunteerism is an honor to do. She says she is always so happy to give back, especially to educators. Most of her family is/has been in education. She believes that through education and the growth of our minds, our hearts and spirits grow twice as much for mankind.

Mrs. Yochelson was nominated by Katie Catlett Lewis for recognizing a need for Student Services to have clothing available to students for accidents that happen at school. Since students are no longer required to purchase Salem shorts for PE, Christy made the effort to donate clothing so our students who need a change of clothes are able to have something here at school. There are many students who do not bring extra clothes and do not have parents that are able to bring a change of clothes to Salem. We greatly appreciate her thoughtfulness in thinking of Salem first when clothes are available. Mrs. Yochelson likes volunteering at the school because it gives her an opportunity to be involved at the middle school level. Since parents no longer go into the classroom like when the kids were in elementary school, this way she gets a glimpse at what's going on in her kid's world. She’s served on the Salem PTA and has been working with Spirit Wear for two years now and enjoys seeing what the kids are interested in. Mrs. Yochelson graduated from NC State and stayed in the area after meeting her husband. They have lived in Cary for 18 years, and have one child who is in 7th grade this year. She works for Moon Dance Soaps & More in Raleigh.

Mrs. DellaMaestra was nominated by Katie Catlett Lewis and Mrs. Hofmann for all of her work with the big fundraiser earlier this year. They both pointed out how tirelessly she worked to make sure that, not only the fundraiser itself was a success, but that the students had a great time who earned the limo ride and afternoon bowling. The kids are already talking about wanting to go next year! Mrs. DellaMaestra has served on her children’s school PTA since 2004 (Salem Elementary, Salem Middle, and Apex High) and is currently VP of Services here at SMS. She is also a substitute teacher for Wake County (usually elementary, but sometimes at Salem Middle). Volunteering is important to her because it helps to raise money for the school so we can provide programs, grants, etc. for the teachers and students. It also enables us to show our appreciation to the teachers and staff and recognize them for how hard they work for our children. She and her family have lived in Apex for 13 years. She and her husband, Wayne, have twin 17-year old boys who are seniors at Apex High and their daughter, Grace, is in 8th grade at Salem.

A big thanks to Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Yochelson, and Mrs. DellaMaestra and all of the other fantastic parent volunteers at Salem Middle!

Volunteers Needed!!!

Hello Wonderful SMS Volunteers!

Thanks so much for your past generosity in helping make our Early Release Luncheons a special treat for our teachers. They enjoy being able to eat together on those days before they head off to training & meetings.

The remaining ER dates are December 2, January 20, February 10, and March 24

We are asking for volunteers to organize any or all of these remaining luncheon dates. This would involve planning a menu, setting up a signup genius, and setting up/cleaning up on those days. The PTA does have a limited budget that can be used to purchase food, and, as you know, our hospitality list is great about sending items in!

Please consider whether you (And a few friends!) could commit to one or more of these dates.

Please contact Karen Dellamaestra at kdellamaestra@gmail.com if you are willing to help with one of these dates.

Spirit Rock

The Salem Middle PTA is proud to offer the opportunity to rent the spirit rock for a week. For the price of $35 a week you can rent the rock to express Salem pride, wish someone a happy birthday or mark a special occasion. Just a reminder that if you rent the rock for a week, you must supply your own paint and paint the rock yourself. Use this link to sign up for the week you want. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c4faca8238-salem2.
